Within the ABC Scope of Practice, changes to the Definition of Common Terms have been made to enhance understanding and clarity. Effective May 1, 2024, the ABC Board has approved to expand the definition of the term Supervision and Privileging of a Credentialed Caregiver for Prosthetics to read:
Orthotists and Prosthetic Assistants who are credentialed by a nationally recognized orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic certifying board or are licensed, if applicable, may be privileged based on Written Objective Criteria to provide prosthetic care. Certified or licensed Orthotic Assistants and certified or licensed Orthotic Fitters may be privileged based on Written Objective Criteria to provide prefabricated non-weight-bearing post-operative transtibial prosthetic devices and related ancillary supplies.
Additionally, the term Ancillary Supplies Related to Non-weight Bearing Post-operative Transtibial Prosthetic Devices will be defined as:
A prefabricated item that is commonly used to support the fit and function of the non-weight-bearing post-operative prosthetic device. This includes, but is not limited to, a prosthetic sock, prefabricated suspension sleeve, prefabricated waist belt, shrinker, prosthetic liner, or replacement padding.
Looking forward a bit, effective January 1, 2025, the Board also approved to revise the definition of the Supervision and Privileging of a Credentialed Caregiver for Orthotics to read:
Prosthetists, Orthotic Assistants and Orthotic Fitters who are credentialed by a nationally recognized orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic certifying board or are licensed, if applicable, may be privileged based on Written Objective Criteria to provide orthotic care. Certified or licensed Pedorthists may be privileged based on Written Objective Criteria to provide lower extremity orthotic care.
