Changes to Certification Eligibility Requirement Effective January 1, 2022

At their September meeting, the ABC Board of Directors approved changes and a new pathway for several of the ABC certification eligibility requirements.

CE Credits for Supervisors/Attestors!

Obtaining clinical experience hours is a critical part of preparing individuals to sit for an ABC certification exam. The board recognizes the commitment that supervisors make in working with exam applicants to achieve the knowledge and competencies necessary to provide safe and effective care. Any ABC certified individual who acts as a supervisor and attestor for the required patient care experience hours is eligible for five Category II continuing education credits. Supervisors are allowed to request these credits twice within their five-year cycle. You can report your category II credits at any time by logging in to your MY ABC account.

New Pathways

Orthotic and Prosthetic Assistants. The board created an additional pathway for these credentials. Individuals who currently hold a nationally recognized license/certification in a related profession (e.g., ATC, PTA,  OTA, etc.) will become eligible to sit for the exam with a reduced number of experience hours: 500 for single discipline applicants and 1,000 for dual discipline applicants. (Note: Dual discipline applicants will need to show a minimum of 250 hours in each discipline.)

Mastectomy Fitters. Based on feedback from the profession, the board reduced the number of experience hours required for the mastectomy fitter credential. Pathway 1 applicants will only need to complete 120 hours of supervised mastectomy fitting experience. Pathway 2 applicants must acquire 60 hours of experience.

Therapeutic Shoe Fitters. Changes were also made to the requirements for this credential. The required amount of supervised therapeutic shoe fitting experience was reduced to 125 hours. Also, any individual who possesses another active ABC practitioner, assistant or fitter certification may apply for the CFts certification once they have completed an approved pre-certification course, without needing to complete any additional patient care experience hours.
