Many facility owners have inquired about the provision of off-the-shelf orthotic devices in response to the changes to the ABC Scope of Practice that took effect January 1. The elimination of privileging of non-credentialed staff does not affect the dispensing of off-the-shelf orthoses.
ABC’s accreditation standards allow for the provision of off-the-shelf orthoses by non-certified staff. This only applies to orthoses that have the term ‘off-the-shelf’ in the Medicare L-code descriptor language. This does not apply to prefabricated diabetic shoes or inserts. All of the usual documentation requirements still apply when dispensing an off-the-shelf item.
