Orthotist/Prosthetist Student & Resident Awards

ABC offers the following scholarship to Orthotic and Prosthetic practitioner students and residents. See below for additional details on each.

  • ABC Orthotist & Prosthetist Scholarship - $10,000 (up to 10 awarded annually)
  • ABC Scholarship for O&P Diversity - $10,000 (up to 4 awarded annually)
  • Resident Travel Award - $2,500 (1 awarded annually)
  • Student Poster Prizes - 1st Place – $1,000 | 2nd Place – $850  | 3rd Place – $650 (3 awarded annually)

Through a partnership with The Foundation for Orthotic and Prosthetic Education and Research (The Foundation), ABC is proud to offer up to ten $10,000 Orthotist & Prosthetist Scholarships.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Enrolled full-time in a CAAHEP accredited orthotist/prosthetist master’s degree program
  • Completed at least two semesters or three quarters of a CAAHEP accredited orthotist/prosthetist program with a minimum 3.5 GPA
  • Individuals may only receive this award once
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need
  • Applicant must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident


REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

  • A statement of financial impact:  If awarded this scholarship, how will it affect your financial ability to complete your O&P education? (Max 200 words)

  • A personal statement: Please tell us about yourself and how your presence will contribute to and strengthen the O&P profession. (Max 500 words)

  • An essay response to the following question: Describe your most meaningful commitment outside of your O&P education and explain why this commitment is meaningful. This could be related to an extracurricular activity, work, volunteering, family responsibility, or any other non-classroom activity. (Max 500 words)

  • An official transcript from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited program in which you are enrolled. This transcript must include your cumulative O&P program GPA. An unofficial transcript signed by the Program Director or Faculty Advisor at your institution is acceptable.

  • Two letters of recommendation:
    1. One letter from a faculty member of the program in which you are enrolled.
    2. One letter from a non-faculty individual such as an employer, volunteer work supervisor, mentor, coach or clergy.
  • Your resume: This document should include information regarding your education, work experience, volunteer activities, honors, awards, research experience, publications, and presentations.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Enrolled full-time and in good academic standing in a CAAHEP accredited orthotist/prosthetist master’s degree program
  • Completed at least two semesters or three quarters of a CAAHEP accredited orthotist/prosthetist program
  • Applicant must be a member of a racial or ethnic population that is underrepresented in O&P: Asian American, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, Native American or Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
  • Individuals may only receive this award once
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need
  • Applicant must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident

Candidates applying for this scholarship should also consider applying for the ABC Orthotist & Prosthetist Scholarship. Although candidates may apply for both the ABC Scholarship for O&P Diversity and the ABC Orthotist & Prosthetist Scholarship, a candidate may only receive one or the other in a given year.

    $2,500

    ABC Awards $2,500 to one current resident (or practitioner who has completed their residency in the last three years) who wishes to present their Directed Study report or project at the Academy Annual Meeting.

    Student Poster Prizes

    $2,500 Total

    ABC has partnered with The Foundation for Orthotic and Prosthetic Education and Research (The Foundation) to identify and celebrate outstanding research by orthotic and prosthetic students*. ABC Student Poster Prizes will be awarded to outstanding student-created posters accepted for presentation at the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists’ (the Academy) Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium. 

    Deadline to Submit: December 3

    Three Prizes Awarded:

    1st Place – $1,000
    2nd Place – $850  
    3rd Place – $650

    Students will be awarded prizes based on the:

    • Quality and thoroughness of their work
    • Originality and independence of their contributions
    • Significance and timeliness of their research results
    • Depth of understanding of their research topic

    To apply,  submit your poster presentation abstract for consideration.  

    *A student is defined as an individual currently enrolled in a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited O&P program who has completed at least one semester toward their degree program.
