In the brief three year history of the ABC fitter credentialing program, over 3,300 orthotic and mastectomy professionals have met the educational and experience standards to become ABC Registered Fitters. In recognition of the success of this program, the professional achievement and status of these professionals, and in accordance with the standard setting mission of ABC, the Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the ABC fitter credentialing program is adopting the title ‘Certified’ for all orthotic and mastectomy fitters.
All current and future ABC fitters are thus designated as Certified Fitters.
This action recognizes the importance of those professionals who specialize in the fitting of prefabricated and off the shelf orthotics and post-mastectomy prosthetics.
With an examination requirement taking effect on January 1, 2006, the ABC fitter credentialing program continues to move forward. All individuals applying for ABC certified fitter status after this date will be required to complete a discipline specific examination. Furthermore, computer based testing will begin next Fall, allowing certified fitter candidates to take the written exam in a local, test-friendly environment.
Cathy Carter, ABC's executive director, has directed the orthotic and mastectomy fitter programs since their inception. "We're extremely proud of the Certified Fitter Program, and look forward to the 2006 examinations and accreditation by the National Committee for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). This progress is a testament to the hard work of the ABC board, committees and staff."
Individuals interested in becoming ABC Certified Fitters are encouraged to contact ABC at (703) 836-7114 or read detailed information on the certification process at www.abcop.org.
